Chapter Ten

~ CALVIN ~

We finished our dinner, but the mood was gone. She was visibly shaken by the news of what had happened to Melissa. The server brought me my flash drive back before we left and headed home. The proposal would have to wait. I didn’t want any negativity around to ruin our moment. We drove home in silence as I rubbed small circles on her neck.

“Jane. You ok?”

She just shrugged her shoulders. “I feel like every time something good happens, something horrible happens.” She sniffed and cried softly, “Are we doomed to a crazy roller coaster? Cuz if we are, I want off.”

“Jane, there’s no one else I want to ride this roller coaster with.” She looked to me, doubt shadowing her eyes. “No one!”

“I just wish it wasn’t so hard.”

“It won’t always be. It can’t be.” I prayed that I was right. We’d been through a lot in our short time together and there were more struggles to come. Eva’s health was declining, the possible murder charges Jane was facing, and now Melissa.

Walking in the door, she made a beeline upstairs. After locking the door and hanging up my coat, I followed her. She was removing her jewelry and had already removed her heels. I watched as she took off her dress and laid it on the chair by the window. I loved watching her. She took the clip out of her hair and her long dark locks fell down her back. She was stunning and didn’t even know it. Removing her bra, she threw on a sweatshirt and some shorts.

Spotting me, she smiled and walked over and wrapped her arms around my waist. “Want to watch a movie?” Her head was resting on my chest as I held her close.

“Sure. Go pick something out. I’m going to change.”

Pulling back, she kissed me and said, “Ok. Don’t be long.”

When I knew it was safe, I pulled the ring out of my pocket and opened up the box. I was eager to see it on her finger. Taking a deep breath, I put it back in the safety of my drawer. Removing my clothes and pulling out some sweats, I spotted some paperwork on her side of the dresser and saw the San Francisco return address. Curiosity got the better of me and I opened it up. I didn’t realize that she owned property there. It appeared that she had an interested buyer.

“Sorry, I should’ve told you.” I turned to see her standing in the doorway. “It was my place with Derek. I have to get the apartment cleaned up so they can start showing it to potential buyers.”

“It says he’s behind on the payments.”

“Yeah. Looks like he stopped paying the utilities and the HOA fees, I got them up to date. I was planning on talking to my boss about flying out in the next couple weeks.”

What? She was going to Cali? “Can’t you find someone to handle it for you?”

“Yes, but I need closure. Given the circumstances, I left a lot behind that I’d like to retrieve.
